Pioneering the Future of Global E-Commerce Logistics
At Amazon, our mission is to be Earth's most customer-centric company. Fulfilling this mission across millions of households requires a highly diversified delivery fleet. While our standard cargo vans handle typical suburban routes, dense urban centers and heavy commercial business districts require a much more robust solution. Enter the Amazon Step Van. The Step Van division is the heavy-duty infantry of the last-mile network. We are actively seeking elite, highly experienced delivery professionals to step up to the plate. If you have mastered the standard delivery van and are ready to pilot a massive commercial walk-in truck, earning higher pay and commanding superior respect on the road, the Amazon Step Van Driver position is the ultimate evolution of your driving career.
About the Role: Commanding the Heavy-Duty Fleet
As an Amazon Step Van Driver, you are upgrading to the big leagues of last-mile delivery. You will operate a massive, commercial-grade walk-in Step Van (similar to a UPS or FedEx delivery truck). These vehicles are significantly larger, wider, and heavier than standard transit vans, capable of holding up to double the package volume. Your routes will be heavily focused on dense commercial business parks, massive apartment complexes, and high-volume urban corridors. This role requires advanced commercial driving skills to navigate tight city streets, physical endurance to manage massive package counts, and the supreme organizational skills required to manage a mobile warehouse on wheels. Because you are operating a regulated commercial vehicle, this role requires specialized DOT certification and represents a highly prestigious position within the Delivery Service Partner (DSP) network.
A Day in the Life of a Step Van Driver
Your day begins at the delivery station with a heightened level of responsibility. Because you are operating a regulated commercial motor vehicle, your pre-trip Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) is intense and highly scrutinized by the Department of Transportation. You check the air brakes, the heavy-duty suspension, and the massive rear roll-up door. You pull your Step Van into the loading matrix. Instead of loading 150 packages, you load 350. You utilize the massive, walk-in cargo area of the Step Van to build a highly organized, sequential mobile warehouse on the heavy-duty shelving. You hit the road, standing tall above regular traffic. Your first stop is a massive corporate office building. You park safely in a commercial loading zone, walk directly from the driver's seat into the cargo bay through the sliding bulkhead door, stack 40 heavy packages onto a hand truck, and seamlessly deliver the massive bulk order to the receptionist. You spend your 10-hour shift executing these high-volume, physically demanding drops, utilizing the superior ergonomics of the Step Van to dominate your route.
Comprehensive and Detailed Responsibilities
- Advanced Commercial Operation: Safely pilot a massive commercial Step Van through incredibly tight urban environments. You must utilize expert mirror-driving skills, master wide-turning radiuses, and understand commercial vehicle clearance heights to avoid catastrophic roof-strikes and accidents.
- High-Volume Freight Management: Manage an exponentially larger package volume. You must utilize advanced spatial organization to sequence hundreds of packages on the interior shelving of the walk-in cargo bay, ensuring you can locate any package within seconds.
- DOT Regulatory Compliance: You are operating a federally regulated commercial motor vehicle. You must strictly adhere to all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, maintain flawless electronic hours-of-service (HOS) logs, and carry your valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate at all times.
- Commercial Bulk Delivery: Execute complex deliveries to major corporate businesses, retail stores, and massive mailrooms. You will frequently utilize heavy-duty hand trucks and dollies to move massive, multi-package bulk orders from your truck to commercial receiving docks.
- Superior Safety Vigilance: Maintain perfect compliance with Amazon's onboard safety telematics systems (Netradyne). Because the vehicle is massive, you must exercise extreme caution regarding following distances, harsh braking, and pedestrian safety in dense city centers.
What Our Drivers Say: Real Employee Perspectives
Graduating to a Step Van is considered a major career milestone for delivery drivers. A veteran Step Van operator shared: "Moving from the standard transit van to the Step Van was the best decision I ever made. Yes, the truck is huge and intimidating at first, but once you learn to drive it, it's actually much easier to work out of. I can stand up completely straight in the back, I have massive shelves to organize my route, and I can walk straight from the driver's seat to the cargo bay without ever stepping outside in the rain. The package counts are huge, but you are mostly doing bulk drops at businesses instead of running to 200 individual houses. The pay is higher, and you feel like a true commercial professional on the road."
Industry-Leading Total Rewards and Benefits
Step Van drivers are the elite tier of the DSP network, commanding premium rewards:
- Premium Step Van Compensation: Earn a significantly higher hourly wage compared to standard van drivers, reflecting the advanced commercial driving skills, DOT certification, and increased physical workload required for the role.
- Fully Paid DOT Certification: Your DSP will completely cover the cost of your commercial driving instruction, road tests, and your required Department of Transportation (DOT) physical medical examination.
- Comprehensive Healthcare: Access to robust, top-tier medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage packages to ensure you and your family remain healthy and protected.
- Paid Time Off & Overtime: Accrue Paid Time Off (PTO) from day one, and capitalize on massive opportunities for time-and-a-half overtime pay during the holiday peak season.
Basic Qualifications and Physical Requirements
- Must be exactly 21 years of age or older to operate a regulated commercial motor vehicle.
- Must possess a valid state driver's license with an exceptionally clean driving record (no major infractions, DUIs, or significant points).
- Must successfully pass a comprehensive Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination and hold a valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate (Fed Med card) prior to driving.
- Exceptional, elite physical stamina is required; you must be able to continuously lift, push, and maneuver heavy bulk orders using hand trucks, and repeatedly climb the high steps into the cab of the Step Van.
- Must successfully complete a specialized, rigorous commercial driving training course and road test specifically designed for Step Van operations.
